It all began with some blackberries…
Pablo Lugones, our founder and jam maker, was working his day job as a buyer for a food distribution company when he received a 50lb sample of blackberries from a supplier. While he only needed a few pounds of fruit to send out as samples for potential customers, he was left with freezer bags full of blackberries that he had no clue what to do with! After doing some research on what to make and how to make it, he landed on the idea of making a blackberry jam that would be both shelf-stable and give Gina, his wife, her freezer space back.
While the jam making started as a way to make use of extra fruit, it quickly grew into a passion for crafting high-quality jams in small batches. After sharing his preserves with friends and family, Pablo and Gina made the decision to start the business in 2016, selling jams and jellies to help pay for the upcoming college tuition for their son, Dominic, at the University of Oregon. Thus, Small Batch Jam Co was born!
What started off as selling at art and wine festivals and online only has blossomed into a full blown operation with a warehouse, beautiful storefront, and over 100 different flavors that ensure there’s something delicious for everyone to try!
Why is our logo a raven?
In 1997, Pablo and Gina were both attending college in Baltimore, MD (at Johns Hopkins and Maryland Institute College of Art, respectively), where they met and had Dominic. Between Edgar Allen Poe's connections to Baltimore and the fact that ravens were also living throughout Pacifica when Pablo, Gina, and Dominic moved back west in 2000, the raven represents the journey of the Lugones family.
"Our promise to you is that our small batches of all natural, hand-made fruit preserves are made with the highest quality ingredients sourced from fresh fruit stands, farmers markets, and hardworking growers while using the same home-style cooking and canning techniques that your grandma used. But don't worry, we won't tell her you like ours better... Enjoy!!!”
